The Village of Plover is located in central Portage County, just to the south of Stevens Point. The village had a population of 12,123 as of the 2010 census.
Plover has had a long road on it’s journey to permanent incorporation. The village was originally incorporated in 1857, but was then dissolved in 1870 when the county seat moved to Stevens Point. Plover was reincorporated again in 1912, but Plover was again dissolved after another election in 1931. Finally, on September 28, 1971, Plover was incorporated as a village for the last time by an extremely close contest that only passed by about 20 votes.
Today, Plover has become a bustling city with many different things to do. The outdoor enthusiast will be pleased with how many parks are in Plover. Almost all of these parks are near a body of water of some sort, so kids can swim in the ponds and those who enjoy fishing can try their luck on some of the larger lakes or even the Wisconsin River. The Wisconsin River offers a wide range of species from Panfish to Bass and all the way down to Catfish. The river is also a great place to relax with friends or take a peaceful kayak trip.
Great dining experiences are a must for any town, and Plover is no exception. There are many different, highly rated restaurants in the area that offer great food year round. For some high quality food at great prices, visit Mikey’s on Plover Dr, right off I-39. Mikey’s has consistently been Plover’s top rated restaurant, and for good reasons. The lunch and dinner menus offer everything from fish baskets to thin crust pizzas. Mikey’s the perfect place for a dinner with friends or to grab a beer and catch the game.
